Salt and Silver - Anna Katherine Don't let the first chapter throw you off!
The beginning is unstructured and therefore confusing. I groaned: Not another new author who does not know how to tell a story! The writing style is probably meant to make the reader curious: All this hopping around from one whiff of the past to another and then a part-flash-back interrupted by a return to the present - that also doesn't last long enough to get a grip. It really takes an annoying while to get all the facts straight. But when one is able to figure out a setting (Six years ago suddenly poor and therefore waitressing Allie accidently opened a door to hell in a New York diner and has since then the gorgeous, but distant gate-keeper Ryan living 24/7 in her basement), the fun finally begins. The main part of the action-packed and love-infused trip to hell - well several hells from different religions - and back is very enjoyable indeed. What I did not like were the two best friends of the heroine: Poor-people-despiser Stan and drunkard Amanda - both a relict of Allie's mindless, rich, partying past on Long Island.
